The Wiz – Wig Designer

Zoe A. Tyler was the Wig Designer for the University of Missouri’s production of The Wiz. There is a long history of White people policing Black folks’ hair. As a White designer, Zoe researched and navigated designing wigs under the supervision and support of Costume Designer Marc W. Vital II. This experience furthered her knowledge of hair types/textures and designing for a show.

One of Zoe’s favorite memories from this production was creating a wig made from hay for Scarecrow. Although the wig was eventually cut from the show, this unconventional wig broke a few sewing needles during construction.
